In this article, we’ll walk you through how to determine if your website uses cookies and, if it does, how to identify your Consent Management Platform (CMP) in a simple, non-technical way.
Step 1: Understand what cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on a user’s browser when they visit your website. They can do a variety of things, including:
-
Tracking and Analytics: Collect data on user behaviour, such as pages visited or actions taken.
-
User Preferences: Store language preferences, login information, or themes.
-
Targeted Advertising: Help show personalised ads based on user behaviour.
By law, some regions require websites to ask visitors for permission before using certain types of cookies. This is where a Consent Management Platform (CMP) comes into play—it’s the tool that helps you manage user consent for cookies.
Step 2: Check for a cookie banner on your website
The easiest way to determine whether your website uses cookies is by looking for a cookie consent banner. This banner typically appears when a user first visits your site and asks them to accept or reject cookies.
Here’s what to look for:
-
Cookie Consent Pop-up/Banner: If a banner or pop-up appears asking users to consent to cookies, then your website most likely uses cookies and has a CMP in place.
-
“Accept” and “Reject” Options: The banner should give users the option to accept or reject non-essential cookies.
If you don’t see this banner on your website, it could mean one of two things:
-
Your website does not use cookies (which is unlikely for most modern websites).
-
You may be using a CMP that doesn’t display the banner or has it set up incorrectly.
To be on the safe side, run your site through https://www.cookieserve.com/ and see if it can detect any cookies.
Step3a: You have found no cookies.
Your site uses no cookies, and you wish to unleash the full potential of N.Rich - in order to install our cookie, there will be a bit of work to be done. To get started, head HERE.
Step3b: You have found cookies. Detecting your Consent Management Platform (CMP)
Your website already uses cookies - so, lets find out which consent management platform you are using.
Ideally, you found your cookie consent banner in the above steps and it came with some form of branding - alternatively, it can feature some form of link towards a privacy policy that surfaces the name of the CMP in question.
If it is unclear, one way of finding out is to rely on BuiltWith - insert your website, click Lookup and on the results page do "ctrl+F" on Windows / "cmd+F" on Mac and search for "consent" - it should tell you whichCMP you are using.
If you are having trouble finding out, send your website link to our support team via the on-site chat (bottom-left corner) OR support@n.rich and we'll gladly help you figure it out.
